The city of Rotterdam
From its beginnings as a fishing village in the 13th century, Rotterdam has evolved into the second largest city in the Netherlands and is now one of the largest ports in the world with a thriving IT business and commencing IT career opportunities.
Rotterdam is a port city of international stature, located right in the heart of the Dutch delta. It is Europe’s largest port and offers inland shipping links that stretch to Germany, Switzerland and France. With a population of just over 600,000 it is the second largest city in the Netherlands. Nearly 80 percent of the city lies below sea level (some parts by up to 6 m). The city and the surrounding region (known as Rijnmond) are protected from the sea by a complex and extensive system of dikes, closure dams and storm surge barriers, all part of the famous Dutch Delta Plan.
Most of Rotterdam’s city centre was destroyed during World War II. From the 1950’s through the 1970’s, the city was rebuilt. It remained quite an empty urban surface until the city council began to support an active architectural policy in the 1980’s.
Since then the city has resurrected, since then, and has turned into a hotspot of modern architecture with new styles of apartments, original office buildings, recreation facilities, a towering skyline and interesting IT career opportunities.
Although Amsterdam is generally viewed as the cultural capital, Rotterdam has some of the Netherlands’ finest museums including the Boijmans van Beuningen, Kunsthal and the Wereldmuseum, as well as a bustling contemporary art scene.
The city is also host to several Dutch festivals, including the North Sea Jazz Festival, Zomercarnaval, which is the second largest Caribbean carnival in Europe, the International Film Festival of Rotterdam, and art festival Motel Mozaique.
Recently Rotterdam was listed eighth in The Rough Guide Top 10 Cities to Visit and fifth in Lonely Planet’s Best in Travel 2016 and was voted 2015 European City of the Year by the Academy of Urbanism.
